Is Felidae the best adult animated movie?
The German animated film "Felidae" came out in 1994 and is an adult film noir story about cats being murdered in a neighborhood. The premise sounds fine, but the movie makes some odd choices, including a sex scene between two cats and tons of nudity in the background for no reason. Where does it rank on the Animated 100 list though?

    Hey, thanks for taking my recommendation! Felidae intrigues me as an adult animated film. Sure, it has a lot of gore and sexual themes (of cats no less), but it's presented with a sense of earnestness rather than tongue in cheek, which I find refreshing. I do wish it had some more run time. Those 80 minutes felt tight, and I would've liked some more scenes to really flesh out the plot and some extra character work. I was pulled in by the mystery but wasn't fully satisfied with the conclusion. Maybe the book is better in that regard. Anyways, to suggest another weird European adult animation, how about Ruben Brandt, Collector ? Worth seeing for visuals alone I think.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse 2 дня назад

      I am with you on the enjoyment of it's earnestness. In a time where everything feels like it's a play on something else, it's nice to see an original story take itself seriously, even if it doesn't land everything it swings for.

    OK, I'm way behind on my video watching (you're so right that there's soo much content out there; I can't keep up!), but I do really like this style of video! And so many of your observations are dead on. In particular, I hate the discourse leading up to the release of a movie that says, "Oh, there were reshoots, the projections for opening weekend are bad, it's gonna be a disaster," and then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: people don't go see things because they've heard they're terrible based on a bunch of buzz that was invented out of thin air before the thing was even released. It's so frustrating, especially for The Marvels, which was such a delightfully fun movie.

    I actually watched this for the first time about 2 weeks ago, in preparation for this video. So I guess, it was on Mal's recommendation. And I have to be honest. This movie deeply disturbed me. So many part of this was disturbing its hard to even start. But the "experimentation" parts of the movie really upset me. It just seemed cruel. I understand scientists experiment on animals to develop things for the betterment of humans. But I don't need to see that in cartoon form. Very upsetting. And honestly, thats just the tip of the iceberg. I don't think I need to watch this film ever again. No disrespect to anyone who enjoys it. It's not for me.

      This is quite the leap from Disney. I'd say this and was ahead of it's time in terms of adult animation. A foul mouthed cat tv show where he investigates murders is something I'd expect from the 21st century on a streaming service like Netflix.

    @glazdarklee1683 5 дней назад

    As always, I wrote this before watching the video: Thanks for suggesting this. It is certainly worth a watch. Although I started with the dubbed version, I feel that the voice acting in the subtitled German version is much more compelling. Of course, the animation is the same in both. I liked that some of it has a quaint 1970s "Chuck Jones" feel, which contrasts starkly with the surreal, grotesque "Ralph Bakshi" dream sequences. Further, there are a few night scenes that I found quite beautiful. But some other parts, well, not so much. I suspect that the violent imagery was intended to underscore the evils of animal experimentation, eugenics, and mystical suicide-cults. Unfortunately, these complicated themes, as well as the associated characters and relationships, are denied enough time to fully emerge and develop. And without this needed set-up, the jarring gore did little but take me out of the movie. All that said, there is some humor, some nice chase sequences, and the noir-inspired mystery is resolved in a way that makes reasonable sense. But, overall, I fear that this film is not high on my list, and the tacked-on epilogue doesn't help.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse 5 дней назад

      I still the think story is the best part of the whole thing, but without the greatness of a supporting cast, it loses a little bit of the flavor it could have had. More time to flesh out some of the side character would have helped, or simply cutting some of them. There really wasn't a need for some scenes. The sex scene, some of the gore, and even the cult could have all been cut down a bit to give more character development. I do agree that it's a movie worth visiting, but not one I'd repeat or even suggest to others. As a film noir lover, I'd recommend so many other murder mysteries before this one.

    I haven't seen this one in years, I remember it being a weird movie featuring cats, kind of like a much milder German spin on Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat from 1972. But Fritz the Cat had more historic impact being the first X rated cartoon movie and being banned in several countries. Felidae just didn't have the same kind of shock value. British animation from the 70s and 80s had some interesting ones, Watership Down and Plague Dogs being standouts.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse 5 дней назад

      I put it into the thumbnail for two reasons. The first is that it describes the film, not my personal thoughts on it. It's a movie about sex and violence within a neighborhood of cats. The second reason is because I knew it was a word that would get views. I hate playing the RUclips game where I make a thumbnail in order to get people to watch, but that's part of the game. I personally don't even care for cats. I've always been more of a dog person when it comes to pets. I especially don't find them sexy. I appreciate anyone who leaves a comment, but please don't pass this sort of judgment onto me without the context of the film I'm talking about or the review that goes with it. It's disheartening to not only have others come here and stand up for me (especially when they don't have to) but also for me to defend who I am when I've never shown myself to be someone who is "disturbed or mentally ill". If you want to have this conversation, I'm more than happy to do it privately. You can always email me, but there is no need to defame my name or anyone else's name in the comments of a video about movies. This is supposed to be a fun place.

I think that this sort of warning is something that a trusted movie reviewer should provide. That way you have some time to process it before you decide to watch. I realize that this is pushing back on the viewer to be more pro-active, so am willing to accept if I am off-base since I, myself, have nothing that I find myself especially "triggered" by. I'm so glad you decided to include and review The Adventures of Prince Achmed. It is such a beautiful and important film that should be remembered and cherished for all. However, I implore you to reconsider the rating you gave for the music and sound. I don't know what print of the film you saw, but pretty much all versions of the film one finds today have just one score, and that score is the original. Yes, this movie came out in the silent era before the invention of synchronized soundtracks for film, but quite often composers would write scores to be followed along by the orchestra and played live specifically for the film, take the score for Charlie Chaplin's The Kid which he wrote himself for example. Most films wouldn't be shown with just some random music, they would be shown with an original composition written specifically for the film the audience was watching, and Achmed is no exception. The score one hears on modern releases of the film, including the one you linked to, isn't some music that someone wrote years later to go along with it, it is a recording of the original soundtrack written for the film by it's composer Wolfgang Zeller for it's original release back in 1926. The film was always meant to be watched while listening to that music, which you must admit is some pretty bad ass music. In fact, this film could even be seen as pretty revolutionary as it actually features some early attempts of syncing sound and picture. For some scenes, Reiniger and Zeller would work closely together to decide the score for a specific scene, and then Reiniger would animate the scene to have the action follow the music beats, such as the scene where the Emperor of China's jester plays the bells, and when it would be played back with the score live the actions would synch up perfectly, movie magic. This was a great review, and I'm sorry if I came off as nagging, but to give this film a zero for music by saying, "It has no score." Is not only an injustice to the magnificent score, but it's also just straight up untrue.

    Very interesting! Also, I used to work with a guy who used to work with Steve Martin at KBF. That's all I got.

    Great video! With that said, I guess no one else remembers Road Rovers as one of these many 1990s Ninja Turtles-style shows because that's another one that popped up alongside Street Sharks and Biker Mice. This guy didn't bring it up. It's okay. Road Rovers wasn't very good anyway. Shows like Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z were WAY cooler. Hell, Street Sharks and Biker Mice were also better.
